Third Cloned
Baby is Born Claims Clonaid
A Japanese couple
is said to have received a third cloned baby by Clonaid.
The announcement came during
a hearing on whether the first baby whose existence had not been validated by
independent scientists should have a court-appointed guardian.
Clonaid spokeswoman, Nadine
Gary, said the groups president, Brigitte Boisselier, would hold another
conference on Thursday in Toronto to talk about the new births, the Japanese boy
and the girl born to a Dutch Lesbian on January 3rd.
But the company has not
produced any proof the babies are clones. Clonaid was founded by the leader of
the Raelians, a sect that believes aliens created life on Earth.
Clonaid has stated that five
births are expected by February 5th, 2003; Clonaid reckoned the first baby was
born to an American family December 26th, 2002.
Clonaid had promised tests
but the parents had backed out of the procedure.
The court hearing was
scheduled after Miami attorney Bernard Siegel filed a petition seeking a
guardian for baby Eve, in the interest of protecting the child.
Testifying by telephone from
his home in Las Vegas, company vice president, Thomas Kaenzig stated Clonaid is
not an incorporated company and the only other Clonaid official he knows is the
president who announced Eve's birth.
Kaenzig's lawyers argue he
has no knowledge of the location of Eve or the mother.
Circuit Judge John
Frusciante got scarce help from Kaenzig when attempting to locate Eve, ordering
the executive to come to court next week for further questioning.
