The Google
Dilemma
Seems to me many webmasters
have been impacted by whats been dubbed “The Florida Update”. Some people have
gone so far as to predict the “death of affiliate programs”.
That I’m not so sure
of.
Have you ever thought that
this recent “update” was meant as a reminder to some of us that we rely too much
on google for free targeted traffic?
Sit back for a moment and
check your web stats.
What percentage of your
traffic is delivered by google?
Quite a bit I
bet.
My understanding is that
this update will affect mostly affiliate sites.
Even though some of you may
not have been affected, don’t you think it may be time to consider putting more
emphasis on receiving targeted traffic from alternative traffic
sources?
Would exchanging links with
other relevant high content sites help?
Yes.
But before you launch a full
blown linking campaign take a boo at the many other traffic generating programs
available on the internet today.
While many of us are on a
limited promotional budget there are some free programs that can help you
diversify where your traffic comes from.
Sure you have the
surf-for-credits programs. Some people make the argument that although the
traffic received from these traffic generating programs is free, it’s not
entirely targeted altogether. Conversion rates go down.
Or should you include that
type of traffic when calculating your ROI?
There are the screensaver
programs.
But how many people actually
sit at the kitchen table working on other projects watching websites being
rotated on their computer screens?
Sure we leave our
screensavers on but how many of us actually look at the websites being presented
to us?
Then there are pop-up
windows which may irritate many people but have proven effective in the past,
although many browsers are equipped with anti pop up software decreasing the
effectiveness of using them as traffic generating tools.
If your like me and don’t
have/want credit cards it can be challenging to promote your self and your site
without plastic, as the majority of sites only take credit cards when it comes
to receiving payment for their services.
Not many pay per click
search engines accept pay pal from what I’ve seen.
But no need to worry, there
are many ways to increase traffic to your site without having to pull your
credit card from your wallet or relying on google.
Write
Articles Publish Good Quality ebooks and give them away. Joint
ventures.
The list goes on
but my point is this:
Even though
google may have “over fluffed” your pillow, you’ll survive. Keep your creative
juices flowing and continuosly work on finding different and unique ways to
bring high quality traffic to your site.
Minimize the risk
by diversifying so that when the next time an “update” happens you won’t have to
worry about the majority of your traffic suddenly disappearing.
