Serpent Like
Sea Creature
August 1st 2002,
Portsmouth R.I. - A fun packed day turned to hell for one group of local
swimmers and fishermen, as Fall River residents Dennis Vasconcellos, Rachel
Carney, Joey Meilloux, Tracy Roberts, a young child and another woman were at
Teddy's Beach in the Island Park section of Portsmouth one Tuesday last
July.
Half the group were fishing,
the other swimming or playing in the sand, but Vasconcellos heard the cry of his
fiancé, Rachel Carney, she was screaming for help, shouting that something was
after her, she was swimming beyond the 'Danger' sign posted at the quiet
beach.
Some thing was in the water
with her, an unknown sea creature, malicious in it's behaviour, described as 15
ft long, with four inch teeth, greenish-black skin and a white belly. It swam
around Rachel Carney, she says, it popping its head out of the water exposing
its teeth and hissing vehemently at her.
“I was out deep in the water
and kept hearing this hissing sound. Then I saw its head come up showing me its
big teeth,” Carney said. “It kept rolling while it was swimming and knocking
into my feet. I just froze.”
Vasconcellos said he swam
out to her, grabbing her by the backside and told her not to look
back.
“This thing was big. I mean
its head was almost the size of a basketball,” Vasconcellos said. “I just kept
backing in to shore, but it was looking at me and hissing. The other people
around were pulling their kids out of the water.”
Within minutes the pair were
back by the beach and safety.
University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth's Centre for Marine Science and Technology in New Bedford, one of the
leading marine science research centres in the region, has its lead
aquaculturist, Ed Baker, baffled by the serpent like creature. He said
Wednesday, the description given is unlike any animal he knows. But did say it
is conceivable a tropical animal had drifted northward through a strong and warm
gulf current.
He said a piranha had been
found in Conventry R.I., and an alligator is on the run in Lincoln,
R.I.
Therefore, the mystery
animal may have been placed in the water by a local resident or it may have been
carried into Rhode Island waters from the south.
Mailloux, who was nursing a
badly wounded leg in the brackish water, said he witnessed the whole
thing.
“I just saw (Carney)
swimming as fast as I've seen anyone go,” Mailloux said. “Then I saw this big,
big thing spinning around the two of them.
It looked like a
giant eel to me, but I'm sure it wasn't because it was so big and had that white
belly.”
Mailloux just minutes before
had caught a fish and slipped on the rocks cutting his legs. He wondered if the
smell of his blood in the water had brought the creature to bear.
“I don't know if it was a
shark or what. All I know is that (Carney and Vasconcellos) were both hysterical
when they got out of the water,” Mailloux said. “I've lived near the water for
years and have never seen an animal like that, ever.”
Vasconcellos is an
experienced fisherman too, he also stated he had no idea what the creature
was.
“My heart is still pounding.
I don't want to seem scared but people should know to keep their children close,
because that thing was definitely big enough to kill us,” Vasconcellos said. “I
thought I was dead.”
Portsmouth police said
Wednesday, they had not received any calls about the large animal. But
Vasconcellos said he would be contacting the police over the incident and
telling them what he and the group saw that day.
Mailloux said he thinks the
animal is nesting under the unusually warm waters of the protected cove. He said
he saw it disappear near one of six broken down piers in the area, which could
be used as a nesting area.
“That thing was not from
around here,” Mailloux said. “I think it might have come up with the tropical
stream of water and found a good place to breed this summer.”
Baker said Mailloux's theory
about breeding in the area is 'somewhat of a stretch,' and believes the sea
creature is in distress, using the pier structure, if at all, as a place to
hide.
