Roswell to
Rendlesham
A parliamentary
watchdog deemed government tried to cover up one of the UK's most famous
sightings of a UFO, heralded as the British Roswell.
The Rendlesham Files,
finally published for the public on Sunday 9th December, has eye witness
accounts by US Air Force officers at a military base close to Rendlesham Forest
and near Ipswich in Suffolk, claiming they saw a brightly lit object land in the
forest in December 1980.
It widely regarded as
similar to the crashing of a UFO with aliens in the craft at Roswell, New
Mexico.
Several people had
complained that to the Parliamentary Ombudsman, Ann Abraham, the Ministry of
Defence had withheld three documents on the reported sightings of aerial
phenomena in 1980 of the Rendlesham Forest Incident. A ministry spokeswoman held
the view that the information was always there for the public to ask to see.
Nothing untoward or underhand had been intended.
It was late December of that
year US officers investigated what they thought to be a crashed plane, seeing a
triangular glowing object that sent cattle into a frenzy.
“The object was described as
being metallic in appearance and triangular in shape, approximately two to three
metres across the base and approximately two metres high,” reads a report in the
file by Deputy Base Commander Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt.
“It illuminated the entire
forest with a white light," he added. "The object itself had a pulsing red light
on top and a bank of blue lights underneath. The object was hovering, or on
legs.”
Skeptics stated nothing more
was seen other than a light from a nearby lighthouse. But further reports went
on to say the next day three depressions seven feet (two metres) in diameter
were found in the grass and readings of beta and gamma were ten times higher
than normal, while disturbances were also noted on radar too.
Later in the night a further
sighting, described as a red sun-like light. "At one point it appeared to throw
off glowing particles and then broke into five separate white objects," said the
file.
A Ministry of Defence (MoD)
memo in the file notes, "No evidence was found of any threat to the defence of
the United Kingdom. In the absence of any hard evidence, the MoD remains open
minded."
Only around twenty members
of the public had seen the file, until last week. The government said it would
be publishing other files of UFO content on the website http://www.mod.uk.
The Rendlesham File contains
a further memo suggesting British requests for audio tapes made by the American
officers at the time but were denied or flatly rejected as existing by the US.
UFO enthusiasts claim photos and audio tapes were taken away by senior US
officers.
Leaving one more thing to
say, “Watch this space!” or head for the Ministry of Defence website.
