One Suspect
Caught in Nevada Horses Slaying
One suspect
accused of the 34 wild horse slayings in Nevada went to court in Virginia City
for arraignment.
The courthouse was roped off
to help protect the first of three suspects, who are accused of shooting the
horses.
This was January 17th,
1999.
Anthony Merlino, 20, of
Reno, did not enter a plea, but the young construction worker maintains his
innocence, Merlino and two U.S. Marines are accused of shooting the horses with
high-powered rifles.
The three went to high
school together in Reno.
Also arrested was fellow
Marine Lance Cpl. Scott Brendle, 21.
Neighbours say Merlino
bragged about shooting birds in the yard and having gutted a deer on his living
room carpet.
Merlino was dressed in a
dark suit and tie when he was arraigned before a Storey County justice of the
peace.
One of the marines, Lance
Cpl. Darien Brock, says he saw two of his friends shoot one horse but doesn’t
know anything about the other animals.
“I watched my two friends
kill this horse without doing anything about it. Yes, that is wrong. That is
what I’m going to court for. But we did not kill 34 horses that night,” Brock
said.
The two marines were home on
leave when the horses were attacked on Dec 27th, 1998.
