John Wayne was
on Stalin’s Hit List
British writer
Michael Munn, author of John Wayne – the Man behind the Myth – reckons Stalin
attempted to have the actor killed during the 1940s and ‘50s due to his stance
on anti-communism.
In the first attempt, two
Russian assassins posing as FBI agents tried to kill him in his office at Warner
Bros. in Hollywood; the plot was uncovered early and the men were
caught.
The assassination attempts
were stopped after Stalin’s death, his successor Nikita Khrushchev was a big fan
of Wayne’s movies, the premier actually met him and told him, “That was a
decision of Stalin during his last five mad years. When Stalin died I rescinded
the order.”
In a non-communist plot,
however, a sniper tried to kill the actor when he visited troops in Vietnam in
1966. Wayne died of stomach cancer in 1979.
