North East of
England Bigfoot
January 7th 2003,
strange creatures have been apart of North-East folklore for centuries, but
there's been recent sightings of our very own Bigfoot.
It's not the kind of place
you would want to visit alone, especially at night with an eight foot like
Bigfoot creature stomping about the woods.
Bolam Lake, near Belsay,
Northumberland, a tranquil country park, set in an underlating landscape just
west of Morpeth, an attraction for walkers, anglers and wildlife enthusiasts.
It's silent and has a rural isolation to it.
According to latest reports
on the British Hominid Research website, three anglers experienced a series of
encounters with what can only be described as a massive man-ape.
Three anglers had been pike
fishing in the early hours of the morning, the park deserted, they got the
feeling they were being watched.
They were walking back along
a wooden footpath towards their car when half way along their route, one turned
to speak to his friend, he was stunned to see what looked like a dark figure
standing behind him in the dark and in the middle of the track with the
moonlight shining through the trees.
The man later told BHR Geoff
Lincoln, “I was sure it was a person, the others did not see it at first.
“I pointed towards the
figure... It looked about 8 feet tall, heavy built, its eyes, or what seemed to
be its eyes, glowed in the darkness. We ran, top speed, all the way to the car.
I had a camera in my bag, but the thought had not crossed my mind, too scared I
think.”
His friend also reported
seeing the creature in March of last year at night, but this time on a hill near
the boundary wall, close to the remains of iron age settlement. He described the
creature as being dark brown with huge muscular arms.
A few weeks later, he and a
friend camped out on the hill after an evening's fishing; 1am, unable to sleep,
he heard snapping of branches and two heavy thumps. One less than ten feet away.
After a sleepless night, the two found their tackle together with everything
tipped out, their fish had gone.
Bolam Lake is not alone in
mystery, legend and folklore, when it comes to sightings of strange beasts.
At Bamburg, on the North
Northumberland coast, a famous folk tale tells of the Laidley Worm, a fearsome
dragon like creature, and in the south region, another dragon known as the
Lambton Worm is spoken of.
Near Alnwick,
sightings of the Wooly man of Rugley have been reported for centuries; the woods
of at Calally near Whittingham, ravaged during the middle-ages by a giant 'devil
pig'.
More recently, sightings of
big cats, puma and panther, have been reported from the hills of Coquetdale and
Northumberland National Park, right across to the coast near
Shilbottle.
Two girls out jogging near
the former pit village were left frightened by a 'lion'; a motorist driving past
woods between Shilbottle and Alnwick saw a giant cat in the road, and allegedly
a big cat was spotted in the grounds of Alnwick Castle.
