CLONAID
FACTORY
Clonaid, the
company that allegedly cloned the first human baby, now states that on Saturday
another child was produced for a Dutch lesbian couple, though neither baby has
been confirmed a clone by genetic testing and scientists are highly skeptical of
the company's claims.
A Clonaid spokeswoman,
Nadine Gary, said in an telephone interview the child had been born Friday but
refrained from stating where.
“It's true a second baby has
been born,” she said. “The parents have Dutch nationality, but they are not in
Holland.”
Gary went on to say that she
expected the baby to be genetically tested proving it is a clone and its DNA
matches that of its mother. The parents of the first baby have refused any
genetic testing to prove cloning.
Brigitte Boisselier,
Clonaid's chief executive and top scientist, told the Associated Press
Television News on Saturday the parents have promised to tell her Monday whether
they wish to go ahead with DNA testing.
Last month Clonaid claimed
to have produced Eve, a cloned girl, purportedly to US parents on December 26th.
The second baby's name and
gender have not been announced. In television interviews, Boisselier claimed the
parents wished to remain anonymous.
Gary said, though the
parents are Dutch, the cloning did not take place in the Netherlands were it is
illegal.
Boisselier is a member of
the religious sect, the Raelians, that believe creatures from out of space
created life on earth. Its founder member, a French journalist, calling himself
Rael, formed the company Clonaid in 1997. It sells cloning services and
products, refuted or not.
Though pigs and sheep have
been cloned successfully, scientists claim it is unethical and risky to produce
human cloning. The technology is unreliable.
