Aston Panther
in Great Britain
Aston, Monday
21st 1997, a spate of sightings refreshes an old mystery in the area, a man and
his black Alsatian dog walked along Piper Lane at 21:40 hrs towards New South
Farm, reaching the junction just by the farm, he saw what he described as a dark
brown panther.
He stated it was the same
size as his dog, but in a position like a stalking cat.
The panther was drinking
from a puddle, hidden behind a tree belonging to the farm.
The man with his dog, having
not acknowledged the panther, went to the local farmer, Mr Foster, and alerted
him to call the police; within the hour, armed police were scouring the area
looking for the animal.
Sightings of a black panther
in this area were common at one time, over a four-year period a panther like
animal stalked the land between Aston and Todwick.
A police officer even
witnessed the appearance of wildcat creature in the field of Upper Whiston but
probably the best sighting over the years was that of farmer Margaret Wood, of
New South Farm, Aston.
On a Sunday, a September
afternoon, Margaret was washing dishes between 13:30 and 14:30 when she spotted
less than 200 yards away what she described as “a large gormless black dog”
walking across a field of freshly cut barley. She soon realised it was a large
cat with a long tail.
She went to fetch her
husband, who’d been drinking and now relaxing after his Sunday dinner, he
ignored her in well accustomed manner and went to fitfully to sleep in his
chair.
She returned to the kitchen
window and spotted the animal heading towards a tree, which she knew overlooked
a small pond/marsh, where it disappeared out of sight over the hill.
The Black Panther sightings
have been reported in South Yorkshire for years. It is believed there is a Black
Panther/Puma/Mountain Lion in the outskirts of Sheffield, surrounding the seven
hills that the city is famous for…
